Review:
This is simply one of the most enjoyable, enchanting
-- and swinging discs to pass by these ears in a long while. That it was
recorded live in
Poland by a three piece of Polish jazz musicians pretty much assures that it
won't be one of the big selling items of the year. Which, given the caliber of
musicianship here, is a shame. This is a combo deserving of a much wider
audience. Their previous recording paid homage to Django Reinhardt and Stephane
Grappelli, and those roots are just as obvious here. There are nods here to
Ellington ("It Don't Mean A Thing," "Caravan," on which violinist Mathiew
Strzelczyk often reminds of the Duke's fiddler Ray Nance), Gershwin ("Lady Be
Good" and a breathtaking "Summertime"), Jobim ("Grande Amore" and "So Dance
Samba"), as well as a wonderful rendition of "As Time Goes By" and a tune
entitled "D Minor Blues." Guitarist Christof Wolinski certainly is enamored of
Django, but there are even glimpses of Gabor Szabo in the mix. Bassist Peter
Rodowicz is reminiscent of Niels Henning. The combination is magic. This will
unquestionably finds its way to my year end Top 10 list. Extraordinary!
